Takeover boost for US plastic bottle recycler’s capacity

Argentina – Major US-based plastic bottle recycler DAK Americas has purchased Argentina’s CabelmaPET. The deal, still subject to antitrust review in Argentina, will bring 16 000 tonnes of recycled PET capacity to DAK America’s existing business, reports Plastics News.

CabelmaPET′s bottle recycling facility in Buenos Aires, produces food-grade recycled raw material from PET bottles. DAK Americas currently produces more than 190 000 tonnes of virgin PET resin at an existing site in Argentina, at Zarate.

′The acquisition not only has tremendous impact in terms of product sustainability, but it will greatly improve our trade balance, allowing us to substitute imports by establishing a raw material stream directly from within Argentina′, claimed Hector Camberos, president of DAK Americas Argentina.

The firm plans to integrate and market the recycled and virgin content as what it calls ′a single-pellet solution′ under its Laser+ brand of PET resins. According to the company, this will help bottling and packaging customers by providing pellets with specified recycled content.

DAK Americas is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is owned by Alfa, a major petrochemical company based in Monterrey, Mexico.
