South Korean microchip manufacturer SK Hynix is increasing the use of recycled materials in its products. It plans to replace virgin copper, tin and gold with reprocessed metals.
SK Hynixaims to use at least 25% recycled materials by 2025, growing to 30% by 2030.
The move is part of the company’s recycling roadmap and the its broader efforts to move towards a more circular economy. SK Hynix also plans use recycled plastic in the packaging of finished semiconductor products.
The manufacturer says it will strengthen certification procedures and the quality evaluation its recycled materials as well as those bought by business partners. Suppliers will be encouraged to obtain validation from trusted external organisations.
More ambitious recycling targets are inspired by SK Group’s intention to realise net-zero carbon emissions across all its businesses by 2050.
