Rio Tinto scraps aluminium refinery in Australia

Mining company Rio Tinto is dismantling an old aluminium refinery in Arnhem Land, Australia. It is shipping the scrap metal to Asia for further processing.

Rio Tinto plans to remove all structures at the refinery site, rehabilitate the land, and expects to finish mining bauxite by 2030. The company says it first had to upgrade the service wharf at Gove Port to allow large ships to dock.

The first shipment of 15 000 tonnes of scrap metal recovered from the demolition is being exported to Malaysia. Another nine loads will follow, also meant for Asian scrap recycling markets. Rio Tinto estimates that the project will yield 142 000 tonnes of scrap metal.
