Aluminium producer Hydro is investing EUR 180 million in a new aluminium recycling plant in Spain. The facility will have a processing capacity of 70 000 tonnes of aluminium scrap per year.
Hydro’s ‘state-of-the-art’ site will be at Torija, generating 70 new jobs. The aluminium recycling plant will contribute 120 000 tonnes of low-carbon metal towards Europe’s energy transition plans.
Hydro says the output are mainly aluminium extrusion ingots serving:
- The transport and automotive sector
- building and construction
- renewable energy
- durable consumer goods
The investment is pending a final build decision due in the second half of the year. Hydro expects production to start in 2026.
‘Worldwide demand for materials like aluminium is growing as we build the infrastructure needed for the green transition,’ says Eivind Kallevik, executive vice president for Hydro Aluminium Metal.
He notes the upcoming recycling facility will produce aluminium with a CO2 footprint below 4.0 kg CO2 per kg of the metal. DNV will provide third-party verification.
Torija will manufacture Hydro’s Circal product which contains a minimum of 75% post-consumer scrap.
