United Kingdom – Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) has won a Gold Zero Waste Award in the partnership category of the Zero Waste Awards 2013 organised by Letsrecycle.com. This accolade follows on from the Resource Revolution Award received by the company earlier this year for its landfill diversion strategy.
Judges were most impressed by CRUK’s commitment to applying the waste hierarchy to a ‘difficult waste stream’. The recycler’s goal for 2015 is to divert from landfill some 25% of the UK’s waste carpet arisings, estimated at around 400 000 tonnes per annum.
By securing the Gold Zero Waste Award, CRUK is automatically entered into the Zero Waste Platinum Award category for the 2014 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. ‘We are thrilled to receive this award that honours the sustained efforts across the entire flooring supply chain in capturing and diverting increasing tonnages of waste carpet from landfill,’ comments CRUK director Laurance Bird. ‘Innovation and input from manufacturers, flooring contractors, distributors and retailers continue to drive our success with landfill diversion rising from 2% to 21.4% in four years.’
