United Kingdom – Researchers have calculated that 680 million items of clothing will be thrown out in the UK this spring – equivalent to more than 10 items for every man, woman and child in the country.
Around 235 million garments will be consigned to landfill, according to the research commissioned by UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s.
Some 49% of the people questioned in the retailer’s survey believed worn-out or dirty items cannot be donated for recycling, prompting Sainsbury’s to urge the public to set aside their used clothes for recycling irrespective of quality.
Furthermore, one in six respondents claimed that they have insufficient time available to visit charity shops or cannot be bothered to sort unwanted items, while 6% did not realise that clothing can be recycled.
Sainsbury’s has laid claim to the title of the biggest single supplier of second-hand clothing to shops run by the charity Oxfam. In the last year alone, the retailer adds, it has helped recycle over 16.3 million garments through the almost 350 donation points at its stores.
The number of clothing items donated has increased by 15% in the last year.
