United States – The US recycling rate for post-consumer aluminium cans jumped seven percentage points last year, according to the Aluminum Association, the Can Manufacturers Institute and the Institute for Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). The rate leapt from 58.1% in 2010 to 65.1% – meaning 61 billion cans were recycled.
The increase is so significant that industry groups are talking in terms of a ‘milestone’ which is more than double that achieved in any other beverage container market. This is an indication, they say, that the self-imposed objective of recycling 75% of available units may yet be realised.
The Container Recycling Institute’s President Susan Collins has told Resource Recycling: ‘It is definitely exciting to see such a notable increase in the aluminium recycling rates in terms of all the different material types.’ She pointed to ‘tremendous benefits’ relating to reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
