Two leading recycling associations are preparing a co-ordinated response to a European Commission consultation on potential new trade measures in the aluminium sector.

The consultation has a specific focus on ensuring sufficient availability of aluminium scrap within the EU market. It is open for feedback until 31 January and examines the impacts of different policy scenarios affecting the EU aluminium value chain.

The Bureau of International Recycling is preparing a joint response with Recycling Europe, with the objective of presenting a strong, coordinated position on behalf of recyclers.

Responses will directly inform a Commission staff working document which is expected to shape potential trade measures on aluminium exports by the second quarter of 2026.

Robust response needed

‘This makes the consultation highly consequential for recyclers, particularly in light of ongoing discussions around export restrictions and market access,’ the organisations say in a joint release. ‘It is therefore essential that the perspective of the recycling industry is clearly and robustly represented.’

They add: ‘We will share this response with members in the coming days to review the consultation materials [so] engage with us if you wish to contribute data, insights or concerns that should be reflected in our response.’
