Sun Metals signs with Buzwair for gas separation plant

India/Oman – The Qatar-based industrial division of the Buzwair Group has been commissioned by United Arab Emirates scrap recycler Sun Metals to build a cryogenic gas separation plant at Sur in Oman.

The proposed plant will have the capacity to produce 60 tonnes of gaseous oxygen a day alongside roughly 70 tonnes of liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon. These quantities are predominantly meant to benefit the production operations of an integrated steel mill, which is due to be constructed at a nearby location.

‘€˜The Buzwair facility will be constructed on the site of the steel mill complex to provide us with a continuous supply of industrial gases,’€™ states Sun Metals’€™ Director of Operations P. T. Sivarajan. ‘€˜Work on the project is expected to commence just after the holy month of Ramadan, with phase one of the project scheduled to come into operation before the end of 2013.’€™

When the 15-year supply contract draws to an end, Sun Metals will have the option to buy back the industrial gases plant from Buzwair, he adds. This presents a valuable opportunity for the company as it invests in the 1.2 million-tonnes-per-annum steel complex at Sur where liquid oxygen and nitrogen are stored as a back-up to enable a stable steelmaking process – even during times when normal gas supplies are insufficient.

Mr Sivarajan forecasts that the new facility will start out by manufacturing some 600 000 tonnes of billets and blooms each year. He also recognises a great potential for it to spawn various downstream investments, sparking supplementary ventures across the Sur area.
