Paprec adds e-waste to recycling scope

France – Privately-owned French recycling conglomerate Paprec has continued its expansion spree with the takeover of Exploitation Ressources Internationales (ERI).

According to Paprec, it aims to transform the bankrupt agricultural plastics processor into a brand new operation focused on the dismantling and recycling of small electronics appliances.

The facility in the south of France’s Cahors region was previously owned by a major Chinese recycler but this business went bankrupt last year. Paprec plans to invest more than Euro 5 million in high-performance sorting machinery and in constructing buildings on the site. Providing 20 jobs, the facility is expected to come on stream in the first quarter of 2012 and will be capable of processing 7000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) per annum.

Historically a paper recycler, Paprec has been extending its activities over recent years into other recycling sectors. Company founder and CEO Jean-Luc Petithuguenin says of this latest project: ‘The law requires that we cannot export e-waste to China or India. The highest level of recycling technology is not outside, but inside France. We are number one worldwide in this sector, closely followed by Germany.’
