Beating the clock on battery passports

A product ID for batteries will be just as normal in the near future as for people.

US player Microvast Holdings has teamed up with tech company Minespider to implement battery passports for all its products.

From February 2027, most batteries must have a product ‘passport’ to enter the European market. This includes all electric vehicle batteries and industrial batteries exceeding 2kWh. The deadline from the updated EU Battery Regulation has producers working hard to safeguard timely compliance.

Readiness

Microvast Holdings, which specialises in energy storage solutions and electric vehicle batteries, wants to be ready ahead of schedule. Minespider is currently assessing the company’s readiness for compliance.

Thanks to the latest artificial intelligence (AI) data management systems, it is able to provide a battery bassport detailing:

  • type
  • chemistry
  • performance
  • sustainability

With the system, companies can upload documents, and AI automatically extracts relevant data into the battery passport. This approach also identifies any potential gaps in data. Established clients include carmakers Ford and Renault.

Mission

‘Partnering with Microvast is a significant milestone in our mission to drive transparency and sustainability in the battery supply chain,’ says company ceo Nathan Williams. He brought the solution to market in 2021.

‘We are committed to leading the industry in sustainable battery innovation and regulatory compliance,’ adds Stefan Herr, executive vice president of Microvast. ‘We want to ensure customers they can rely on us to deliver batteries that are both technologically advanced and fully compliant with the highest sustainability standards.’
