Kühltec AG of Rothrist in Switzerland is now operating a cooling unit recycling plant which complies with Swiss pollution control regulations.
Installed by Untha Recylingtechnik of Germany, the plant has the capacity to handle approximately 120 cooling units per hour. After the removal of the compressors, the units are automatically conveyed to lifting sluices along two separate lines. This gas-tight introduction is followed by the shredding of the cooling unit housings during which valuable substances and noxious matter are separated and automatically filled into containers. A nitrogen-operated, low-temperature condensation system liquefies the blowing agent released by the expanded insulating material.
A process visualisation system allows for material input registration, emission value monitoring and automatic weighing of the output fractions. A check on plant efficiency has confirmed a high CFC recuperation rate. Measured emission values are well below legal limits.
Currently, Untha Recyclingtechnik is supplying a combined recycling plant for household appliances and cooling units to Palma de Mallorca. This will allow all household appliances collected on the Spanish island to be recycled to professional standards.
