Expansion worth 17 million reflects bright outlook for UK recycling major

United Kingdom – Associated Waste Management (AWM) is counting down to the opening later this month of a new 18 000-square-metre recycling facility at Leeds in the north of England.

‘The Stourton facility acquisition is the result of a number of significant contract awards for AWM over the past 24 months, culminating in the need for greater levels of innovation and processing capacity,’ comments the company’s commercial director Tim Shapcott. ‘It is a key element of our continued expansion plans.’

The plant has been supplied and installed by Germany’s Eggersmann engineering group. Euro 10 million has been invested in the facility itself, with an additional Euro 5 million in modern recycling equipment and Euro 3 million in collection vehicles.

The depot will create 40 jobs and will include the refurbishment of the site over the first four-year term of the 20-year lease.

AWM processes and recycles all grades of paper, plastics, metals, wood, textiles, bricks/rubble, glass, food and organic fractions, using any non-recyclable items for energy recovery. It has an annual turnover of Euro 50 million and employs more than 270 full-time staff. Headquartered in Leeds, some 5 km from the new site, AWM operates from a number of strategic locations in the county of Yorkshire.

In 2015, the company was ranked in the top 10 of UK energy-from-waste exporters, producing 180 000 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel which supplied combined heat and power plants both in the UK and Continental Europe.

The Stourton facility is licensed to process 250 000 tonnes per year, increasing AWM’s waste and recycling activities to 875 000 tonnes per year.
