Organised as part of Britain’s presidency of the European Union, the delegation was led by the country’€™s Prime Minister Tony Blair and included President of the European Commission José Manuel Baroso, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and some 20 leading businessmen from across Europe, one of whom was Peter Mathews CMG, owner and CEO of Stourbridge-based ferrous and non-ferrous metals trading company Black Country Metals. While in India, Mr Mathews met with India’€™s Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath, among others.
Mr Mathews comments: ’During our discussions, it became obvious that there is a balance/imbalance between the Chinese and Indian economies on the one hand, and the US economy on the other. Europe is somewhere in between. I pointed out that it would be of interest for India and Europe to strengthen the ties between the two economic blocs. In addition, we talked about the advantages of sustainability through recycling and about the need to establish a global level playing field.’€™
