The city of Cardiff in Wales has signed a contract with Dutch company Bollegraaf Recycling and building contractor Stradform for a new £4 million (‘‚¬ 5.9 million/US$ 7.2 million) materials reclamation facility (MRF). The facility, scheduled to be operational by spring next year, will be the first council-operated plant of its scale and kind in the UK.
Speed of separation of recyclable waste is expected to be 10 times greater than at the council’s current facility. State-of-the-art equipment will be used for separation, with workers stationed alongside conveyor belts in each of four sorting halls to remove any contaminated materials. It has been estimated that the new MRF will be able to process up to 60 000 tonnes of recyclable waste per year.
Once the plant becomes operational, it is intended that a new integrated kerbside recycling scheme will be brought on stream.
