Turkey stops rebar exports to Israel over Gaza

Turkey has included ferrous and steel products in a ban on exports to Israel because of its response in Gaza to the violent attacks by Hamas last year.

According to the Irebas, the global association of producers and exporters of long steel products, Turkey accuses Israel of violating international law. Restrictions on 54 product groups came into force on 9 April.

The products affected include rebar, wire rods and flat steel products, as well as steel pipes and fittings, profiles, iron and steel construction materials, iron-steel wire, cement, aviation and jet fuel and metal processing machinery.

Irebas reports the measure will remain in effect until Israel declares a ceasefire in Gaza and allows an uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

According to Irepas, Turkey exported 49 990 metric tonnes of rebar and 11 387 metric tonnes of wire rod to Israel in the first two months of the year. Israel was then Turkey’s biggest market for rebar exports.
