Leading Irish waste manager Enva has announced plans to expand its fridge recycling capability with a new facility to serve London and the south-east of England – the most densely populated part of the country.
The site, capable of processing 35 000 tonnes per year, is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026. Barry Phillips, md for fridges, WEEE and glass at Enva, said the development offered ‘much-needed additional processing capacity’.
‘It demonstrates Enva’s commitment to executing its long-term growth strategy and investing in the latest technology to safely and sustainably process end-of-life fridges while realising their commercial and environmental value,’ he added.
Market-leading
Enva said the move strengthens the company’s market-leading position across the UK after recent new plant builds in Perthshire, Scotland and Toomebridge, Northern Ireland.
In 2023, Enva, acquired Environcom, then one of the UK’s largest independent e-scrap recycling companies. It took over two recycling facilities in Grantham, Lincolnshire and Stourbridge in the West Midlands. Together, they recycled more than 12 000 fridges a week.
Last summer, Enva’s facility in Perthshire came online to provide enough domestic recycling capacity for the country’s waste fridges. It also had the capability to recycle over 10 000 tonnes a year of small domestic appliances such as kettles, toasters, vacuum cleaners, and coffee machines.
The group today operates across 38 facilities in the United Kingdom and Ireland, employing more than 1 700 people.
