DS Smith is spending more than EUR 14 million in its packaging facilities at Timișoara and Ghimbav in Romania.

The company says the investment will strengthen production capabilities while supporting circular packaging development for international customers.

According to DS Smith, the Romanian operations also serve as an innovation hub where multidisciplinary teams design and test packaging concepts for global brands.

Romania continues to attract packaging and recycling companies due to its expanding manufacturing sector.

Circular portfolio

Circularity remains a central focus for DS Smith’s sites, particularly as demand rises for recyclable and fibre-based packaging solutions across Europe.

As an example, DS Smith has unveiled recyclable corrugated inserts for Somfy roller shutter motors, replacing expanded polystyrene packaging with fibre-based alternatives.

The inserts are designed to fit 34 different motor lengths and four box sizes. DS Smith says the modular setup allows faster assembly and easier handling during industrial packaging operations.

The project was led by DS Smith’s design teams in Kunheim, France, together with Somfy engineers.

Green modularity

Benjamin Chedal, sales, marketing and innovation director at DS Smith Packaging France, says the project reflects fast growing demand for sustainable industrial packaging. ‘We are proud of the rollout of this concept,’ he says. ‘It demonstrates the modularity, relevance and long-term viability of the materials used.’

According to DS Smith, the packaging system underwent multiple design stages and real-world transport testing before final approval.

The compact cardboard design reportedly takes up less storage space than conventional expanded polystyrene packaging. In turn, this could help reduce logistics and warehousing pressures.

DS Smith is looking for partners with the same circular mindset. Recently, it teamed up with Absolut Vodka to introduce recyclable corrugated fibre boxes for drinks packaging applications.
