French recycling major Derichebourg has acquired Scholz Recycling Group of Germany from Chiho, marking a major step in the company’s international growth strategy and reinforcing its position in global metal recycling.
Scholz is one of Europe’s leading recycling companies, with operations in Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and joint ventures in Austria and Romania. The EUR 1.6 billion turnover company processes more than three million tonnes of recycled ferrous and non-ferrous metals, paper, cardboard, and plastics. Scholz employs some 3 500 people.
The acquisition opens the door to further expansion of Derichebourg’s operational footprint across Europe through the integration of 180 recycling facilities and yards, in markets where the French group currently has limited or no presence.
Supporting green steel
The deal also aligns with Europe’s broader industrial decarbonisation efforts. As steel manufacturers shift from traditional blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces, demand for high-quality recycled scrap metal is growing rapidly. Derichebourg says the transaction will strengthen its ability to support this transformation while enhancing logistical and commercial synergies across the continent.
‘Pivotal step’
Derichebourg’s ceo Abderaman El Aoufir describes the agreement as a transformative moment for the group. ‘This project marks a pivotal step in our international expansion strategy,’ he says.
Derichebourg has operations in 13 countries. The EUR 3.3 billion turnover company employs more than 5 000 people worldwide.
