Hyundai’s Louisiana Steel division has selected Italy’s Danieli as its technology partner for the construction of a new integrated steel plant in Louisiana, USA.
The new facility will produce high‑quality hot‑rolled slabs, primarily intended for low‑carbon, high value steel grades for the North American automotive market.
The contracts awarded to Danieli include supplying two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) with secondary metallurgy, two thick slab casters, and two slab reheating furnaces. In addition, the Energiron consortium of Danieli and Tenova has been selected as the supplier for the direct reduction plant (DRP).
Sustainable steelmaking
The DRP will be the second of its kind in the USA, with an expected capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of hot and cold direct reduced iron per year. Danieli says it represents one of the most sustainable steelmaking solutions on the market.
The meltshop will feed the casting area at an annual production rate of 2.88 million tonnes. It will include two EAFs. The two slab continuous casters incorporate Danieli’s latest 3Q technologies and are designed to produce conventional thick slabs for quality grades, including low‑carbon‑emissions steel.
Special attention has been given to mould‑level stability and surface quality, meeting the stringent requirements of automotive applications. Two walking‑beam reheating furnaces, each rated at 280 tonnes per hour, complete the production line.
Strategic partnership
Hyundai and Danieli are strengthening an existing strategic partnership. Louisiana Steel will operate one of the first EAF‑based, fully integrated steel mills dedicated to automotive steel production in the USA.
Danieli says the project confirms its position as the preferred technology partner for leading steelmakers worldwide, thanks to proven solutions that combine the lowest environmental footprint with high operational reliability.
