Total world crude steel production was 1 882.6 million tonnes (Mt) in 2024, down 0.8% on the year before, according to data from the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
As ever, China dominates the global table with its 2024 total on 1 005.1 Mt, a fall of 1.7%. Indian is in second place with 149.6 MT, a jump of 6.3%, followed by Japan (84.0 MT), the US (79.5 Mt), Russia (estimated at 70.7 Mt) and South Korea (63.5 Mt) – all showing single digit declines.
The Netherlands, in 26th position, recorded the greatest percentage increase in production at 36.1% while the UK (35th) was down 29.0%, the biggest decline.
December data
Meanwhile, crude steel production in December was 144.5 Mt, a 5.6% increase on the month compared to December 2023.
China produced 76.0 Mt up 11.8% while the Indian total was 13.6 Mt, up 9.5%. Japan produced 6.9 Mt (-1.1%); US 6.7 Mt (-2.4%); Russia an estimated 5.7 Mt (-8.6%); South Korea 5.2 Mt (-3.2%); Germany 2.7 Mt (+4.1%); Türkiye 3.0 Mt (-7.6%); Brazil 2.6 Mt (+1.8%); Iran 2.6 Mt (-8.2%).
