Pakistan’s PET producer Novatex has invested in the launch of a bottle-to-bottle recycling line.
With the new Starlinger recycling system, the company can handle up to three tonnes of food-contact rPET per hour, which amounts to an annual production output of more than 24 000 tonnes. The produced rPET chips are used in the company’s own PET preform production or sold on the local and international markets.
Environmental challenge
Pakistan generates around 3.9 million tonnes of plastic waste per year, of which only 4-9% is recycled. The country is working on setting up a waste management strategy but there is no national mandatory recycled content quota for plastic packaging.
With plastic use increasing by 15% per year, mainly driven by single-use products, and plastics making up almost 40% of the solid waste in the River Indus, the country is confronted with environmental and public health challenges.
Meanwhile PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are pushing the use of recycled plastics, relying on companies such as Novatex for sourcing recycled materials.
