Discarded fishing nets are being transformed into industrial packaging through a new partnership between global plastics producer Alpla and Danish recycling company Plastix.
The OceanIX project reflects Alpla’s broader commitment to sustainability across its operations, says the company. Through its global Zero Pellet Loss programme, the company is working to prevent plastic pellets from entering the environment by implementing strict standards that protect soil and water at all production sites.
Recycled content
Alpla is also promoting evidence-based sustainability. It claims that independent life cycle assessments show that plastic packaging – particularly PET made with recycled content – can outperform alternative materials in key environmental categories, including climate impact, ecosystem protection and human health.
Vegan styling cream
Further innovations include a bio-based jar for vegan styling cream, made from renewable raw materials to reduce dependence on fossil resources, and an internal closed-loop production system that recycles manufacturing waste back into production, conserving materials and supporting circular manufacturing.
