A second major car manufacturer has signed up to use Hydro’s Circal aluminium alloy which is made from at least 75% post-consumer scrap metal.

General Motors’ Cadillac Optiq is to feature a front bumper system made with Circal. The alloy is being independently verified by DNV, providing traceability in support of OEM sustainability reporting.

Made in Michigan

Produced at Hydro’s newest recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan, Circal is helping GM to increase material circularity and lower the embedded carbon footprint of a prominent component.

Duncan Pitchford, vp, recycling, Hydro Aluminum Metal, points out that Michigan built the automotive age.

‘Now it’s building what comes next,’ he says. ‘This is circularity in action and we’re doing it with materials we already have in the United States. By sourcing recycled aluminium locally and making it in Michigan, GM strengthens US production and supply chain resilience, reduces reliance on foreign materials, and advances practical circularity.’

Mercedes in Europe

In early August, rival Mercedes-Benz announced it was set to be the first automotive company in Europe to integrate Circal product into the manufacture of the next generation of its larger electric vehicles.

Norway’s Hydro and Mercedes say they are continuing to explore additional opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of aluminium at industrial scale.
