Prime Green Recyclers (PGR) has become the first ship breaker in Pakistan to secure approval as a compliant yard under the Hong Kong Convention (HKC).
Although Pakistan is a world leader in dismantling ships, its yards have lagged behind competitors in India or Bangladesh in achieving HKC recognition for their sustainable and safe practices. The regional sector has been dogged by criticism from campaign groups for years.
Others to follow
HKC compliance has been recognised by classification society Bureau Veritas and it is thought other Pakistani yards could soon follow.
PGR was established in 2000 as Prime Ship Breakers under the leadership of Farrukh Panjwani and has dismantled more than 100 vessels. It also trades in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Visionary
According to the company website: ‘With over two decades of operational excellence, we are dedicated to supporting the country’s iron and steel needs through sustainable and environmentally sound practices. Our primary focus is on ship dismantling, carried out in full compliance with international safety and environmental standards, including the HKC.’
It adds: ‘As we continue to grow, Prime Green Recyclers remains committed to being a leader in responsible ship recycling, not just in Pakistan but across the region. Our journey is fuelled by visionary leadership, solid values and an unwavering focus on sustainable innovation.’
