France – The European division of car manufacturer Toyota is teaming up with French battery recycler Société Nouvelle d’Affinage des Métaux (SNAM) to process end-of-life electric car batteries. The partners have signed a three-year framework agreement covering sustainable recycling of high-voltage industrial nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.
The Japanese firm has sold around 370 000 Toyota and Lexus brand hybrids in Europe since 2000, all of which have been equipped with NiMH batteries. Under the agreement, SNAM will ensure maximum output of secondary raw materials from the batteries undergoing treatment.
The agreement also means recovered NiMH batteries can be taken back at any of Toyota’s European operations, including its European head office in Belgium as well as any of its nine manufacturing facilities, 30 national marketing and sales companies (NMSCs), 3000-plus Toyota and Lexus dealerships, and any authorised end-of-life vehicle treatment operator. SNAM will provide all required documentation to NMSCs, such as reports on recycling efficiency, to ensure accurate reporting to national authorities in accordance with the EU Battery Directive.
