The company has been given the go-ahead to pursue plans to recycle polythene bags, local newspaper ’The New Times’ has been told by Dr Rose Mukankomeje, Director General of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA). The next step will be for Soimex to enter into an agreement with the government regarding the products to be created from these unwanted plastic materials, she added.
The recycling plant is considered an appropriate response to the controversy over a 2005 ban preventing shops and companies from giving or selling plastic bags to their customers. Unpopular among the public and traders, the ban is often violated; in April this year, REMA contracted private firm Great Lakes Property Protection and Reinforcement Company to investigate breaches of the ban.
