United States – The best recycling facility in North America is the City of Dallas’ MRF, so the National Waste and Recycling Association has announced. Winning the annual accolade is particularly special given that the 15 000-square-foot plant was opened only in January this year.
The new materials recycling facility has the capacity to process around 140 000 tons of recyclables per year, handling approximately 40 tons per hour.
The site is operated by FCC Environmental Services and caters to some 2 million people in North Texas. Local authorities say the state-of-the-art recycling centre is vital to achieving the sustainability goals outlined in the Dallas Zero Waste Plan.
The city is committed to recycling at least 40% of its waste by 2020, increasing to 60% by 2030 and then to zero waste by 2040.
‘This MRF is a critical piece of infrastructure because all single-stream recyclable material from the City of Dallas, and surrounding areas, will be processed here over the next 15 years, with a possible extension for an additional 10 years,’ reports FCC Environmental Services.
