Recycling International’s 2023 Top 100 contains recycling hotshots from 33 countries. The five most represented countries are: USA, the UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, with notable mentions for Ukraine, Israel, Indonesia, Mexico, India and France.

African representatives include: Nigeria (two), South Africa, Rwanda and Ghana.

New in the Top 100

The 2023 RI Top 100 welcomes 27 newcomers, among them metals recycler Anil Shah (UAE/Canada), e-scrap trader Rom Patel (UK) and plastics recycler Josef Tapper (Sweden). While North America and Europe have the most places, more initiatives are popping up in Africa.

Continued ‘girl power

This year’s Top 100 also shows that recycling is becoming less of a man’s world. Of the 100 leaders and projects spotlighted, 31 are women.

As with the previous editions, the 2023 list is not ranked by scrap volume or company turnover. ‘Put simply, it contains people we believe are making the difference, are an example or inspiration to others, or stand out from the crowd,’ says RI’s chief editor Martijn Reintjes.

We’re all winners…

An important aspect to underline is that RI’s Top 100 is not a winner-takes-all ranking event. Everyone in the list is a winner, whether they are at number one, 37 or 99. Nor is it a static list because the Top 100 is published annually.

‘Each year, we want to make it more wide-ranging and comprehensive so, if you’re not in the list this time, you may well be included next year,’ Reintjes concludes.
