The Furniture Recycling Group (TFRG) has rebranded itself as RetourMat UK. In the Benelux countries, the company previously known as Retourmatras will be known as RetourMat.
‘RetourMat reflects what our business has become: part of one European company with a shared ambition to build a more circular future for mattresses,’ the company explains.
Two million mattresses
TFRG was founded in 2012 to find a better solution for mattresses that had reached the end of their useful life. Since then, the business has grown to become a leader in mattress recycling in and outside of the UK.
Across Europe, RetourMat processes around two million mattresses every year. It works with leading retailers, manufacturers and waste management businesses as well as local authorities and other organisations.
‘Along the way, our focus has evolved’ RetourMat says. ‘Today, our work isn’t simply about recycling mattresses. It’s about looking at the entire product lifecycle and asking how we can retain the greatest possible value from both the product and the materials within it.’
Scaling up ambitions
‘What changes is the name above the door and the scale of the ambition behind it,’ the company adds. It estimates 40 million mattrasses are discarded across Europe every year. That means there is still a lot of work to be done.
Building on market demand, RetourMat launched dedicated R&D projects and recycling plants in the UK, the Netherlands and France in recent years. It is getting ready to enter the Scandinavian market.
As RetourMat UK, the company will continue to provide core services across:
- mattress recycling – recovering valuable materials from mattresses at the end of their useful life
- mattress rejuvenation – professionally processing and giving a second life to customer returns
- circular materials – finding valuable applications for materials recovered through the recycling process.
