The new machines were launched in the U.S. last year and the first model to appear in the U.K. and Europe is the Advantage 500E, which has a gross weight of 45 tonnes and replaces the 40-45 tonne Cat-powered ’Impact’ 91K. The latest machine is powered by a 500hp (375kW) John Deere 6125H six-cylinder, turbo-charged diesel engine in which an efficient and substantially quieter power train has been installed to meet latest stringent EU noise control regulations.
Other new features include repositioning of the cab (460mm further forward) to allow space for an enlarged air intake and cooling system, and also to provide the operator with a better view over the blade.
The biggest model in the new range – the 600hp (450kW) Advantage 600 – weighs in at 58 tonnes and is claimed to be the largest landfill compactor in the world. Al-Jon has adopted the latest bolt-on version of the Macpactor ’Diamond’ tooth design on the compaction wheels and has already patented the ’cone-less’ (I-beam rim) compactor wheel which, with clear access inside the rim, is ready-made to accept the bolt-on type of tooth. This offers several advantages in operation, such as eliminating the need for on-site welding when replacing teeth, with a requirement for only an air-gun to tighten the bolts. Also, any maintenance can be carried out without having to move these large machines off site.
Since its introduction in January, Advantage compactors have already been delivered to two U.K. waste management operations – Cory Environmental in Essex and Devon Waste Management in Torrington.
