Denmark/Sweden – Swedish scrap group Stena is set to acquire the Grenaa shredder operation from Danish company Uniscrap, according to an article in Steel Business Briefing. The deal was scheduled to take effect from October 1 once Germany’s competition authorities had given their approval, which is necessary because Uniscrap is owned by German scrap operator Scholz.
Stena already operates two shredders in Denmark – at Roskilde and Copenhagen – whose combined capacity is smaller than the 4000 HP Grenaa plant. Without the acquisition, Stena would be short of shredder capacity in Denmark, it is argued. Furthermore, Grenaa is a port with deep-sea shipping facilities. Following the deal, Uniscrap’s remaining 16 sites in Denmark will remain under Scholz’s ownership.
According to Stena, it has restructured in Denmark to bring its three businesses under one roof. Formerly, Stena Miljo handled hazardous waste, Stena Averhoff processed office waste while Stena Jern & Metal was the ferrous and non-ferrous business; the merged entity, Stena Recycling, came into being from September 1. ‘Our customers increasingly want a single point of contact for all their recycling needs,’ says Lars Petersen, the new company’s Managing Director.
