Germany / Australia | Duesmann and Hensel Recycling of Germany – one of the world’s largest processors of used catalytic converters – is to establish Australia’s first-ever facility for recycling spent converters.
Currently being built and tested at Duesmann and Hensel’s headquarters, the new facility will be based in Melbourne and will have the capacity to process all spent ceramic catalytic converters arising in Australia and New Zealand. The installation will include a sampling facility and laboratory – described as essential elements for determining the quantities of platinum group metals (PGM) in spent converters.
Duesmann and Hensel’s CEO in Australia Will Tomadin explains: ’Our plant will shorten the time it takes for volume sellers to realise the value of the PGM loadings in their ceramic converters. Our toll-processing option is a win-win situation. By toll processing, the customer can elect to retain full ownership of the precious metals in their converters, and once the quantity and the value of precious metal is determined, the customer can decide to sell them or keep them by opening a precious metal account with us. Their scrap catalytic converters have been transformed into the precious metals palladium, rhodium and platinum.’
Duesmann & Hensel currently operates plants in Germany, Austria, France, Malaysia and China.
