Alang turns to shipbuilding
Shipbreakers at Alang in India are now eyeing up opportunities in the shipbuilding trade following a decline in their traditional activities.
Having been hit by cut-throat competition from Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as by pressure from environmental groups, a handful of shipbreakers has approached the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) about land acquisition. H K Dash, Vice-Chairman and CEO of GMB, confirmed that the board had received several inquiries about shipbuilding opportunities near the Alang coast.
GMB is also promoting shipbuilding activities in the state as part of a new port policy; indeed, a site between Alang and Mithiviradi in Bhavnagar had already been identified.
