She has come up with 83 original creations to date but her goal is to create 100 garments and establish the largest single designer collection of ’Trashy Fashion’ in the world. According to Mrs Finstad, the purpose of the collection is ’to amuse, entertain and inspire people to recycle by utilising materials from a variety of industries and turning them into sometimes whimsical, sometimes sexy, sometimes flattering and sometimes sassy outfits.’
Mrs Finstad firmly believes in the relevance of recycling and reuse in today’s disposable world. ’I feel passionate about recycling because it is so important to reduce the amount of stuff we throw away, which is why I have used my art and inspiration to raise awareness in a very original way,’ she says. ’When the exhibit is complete, I would like to photograph the fashions at appropriate locations so the viewer can easily make the connection between finished garment and reclaimed material.’
Mrs Finstad’s fashions have attracted quite a lot of media attention in Canada and even the Guinness Book of World Records is interested in her collection. However, her project is not a commercial venture and the garments are not for sale.
