Thailand – Switzerland-based Global Steel Dust Co. (GSD) is preparing to construct what will be South East Asia’s first steel dust recycling facility. The Euro 30 million project is expected to be kick-started as soon as Thailand’s Board of Investment awards the necessary investment privileges.
The operation, to be built in Amata City on Thailand’s eastern seaboard, will feature Waelz Kiln technology and is predicted to have the potential to recycle up to 110 000 tonnes of steel dust per annum. This Thai expansion will create GSD’s first facility outside the USA.
The company’s Chief Executive Russ Robinson expects capacity could be doubled if the steel industry shows future growth, adding that ‘commercial production will commence in the fourth quarter this year’. With credit financing and sales agreements secured, GSD has already purchased Euro 4.9 million worth of equipment.
Thailand’s 14 electric arc furnaces generate around 80 000 to 100 000 tonnes of dust a year, most of which is destined for landfill despite a valuable zinc and iron content.
