United Arab Emirates – UK-based electronics recycling specialist Sims Recycling Solutions, a division of global recycler Sims Metal Management Ltd, has opened the doors of its first electronics recycling and end-of-life IT asset management facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The new plant, located in Jebel Ali, Dubai, is operated by trading subsidiary Sims Recycling Solutions FZE. The venture is supported by fellow Dubia e-waste company Akhdar FZCO, which hailed the ‘first and only fully compliant recycling and reuse facility, operating to globally recognised standards’ as a positive development for the Guof Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
The Sims subsidiary offers secure destruction of software or the physical equipment. ‘Most importantly, it allows them to choose between recycling and re-selling their old IT assets,’ the company said.
Launching the new enterprise had been a demanding four-year process, admitted Akhdar FZCOManaging Director Philip Hughes. ‘We have effectively created a new industry from scratch, one that will offer not only ‘green’ benefits to the region, but also offers new revenue streams and market opportunities for the entire Middle East IT channel,’ he said.
There had been increased recognition in recent years that the GCC region must develop greener solutions, Mr Hughes added. ‘For the general public this has manifested itself as a growing awareness of the need to recycle domestic waste products, especially high-value items such as IT and electronics.’
