UAE claims car recycling scoop

United Arab Emirates – Valuable metals contained in the vast numbers of dumped vehicles across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will finally be recovered with the opening of its ‘first’ car recycling plant, says recycler Bee’ah. The facility celebrated its official launch on February 19 and has handled more than 350 cars since a ‘test phase’ began in October last year.

Besides recovering metal scrap, the facility will also target plastics, upholstery, cable and mechanical parts. Boasting a processing capacity of 60 vehicles per hour, it relies on advanced shredding equipment as well as manual dismantling upon arrival.

Around 11 000 vehicles reach their end-of-life stage every month in the UAE, according to Bee′ah′s director of waste management Darker El Rabaya.

Targeting ′steady supply′

While a large number of cars are scrapped for parts on a daily basis, ′this is the only facility today that can deal with end-of-life vehicles in the country′, asserts Bee′ah′s ceo Najib Faris. The company is currently in talks with several international companies to take apart and reassemble the incoming scrap car parts, he adds. For the time being, however, the objective is to secure a ′steady supply′ of material.

Bee’ah is aiming for the 100% landfill diversion target set for the Emirate of Sharjah by the end of the first quarter of 2015. Its commitment has not gone unnoticed: the recycler took home the ′Best Waste Management Company in the Middle East′ title from the 2013 BGreen Awards.
