An investment of US$ 860 million (EUR 792 million) in a 650 000 tonnes-per-year rebar micro mill in the US has been approved by the board of steel giant Nucor.

The new mill, in the Pacific Northwest, will be Nucor’s fourth and largest rebar micro mill. It will have approximately 50% more production capacity than a mill currently under construction in North Carolina. Construction is expected to take two years, subject to regulatory approvals.

It will produce a full range of rebar sizes and will have spooling capabilities. The company says increased US infrastructure investments will continue to boost the domestic rebar market.

Serving customers west of the Rocky Mountains

‘The rebar we produce at our Nucor micro mills is made from nearly 100% recycled scrap, making it some of the cleanest steel made anywhere in the world,’ says ceo Leon Topalian. ‘This new rebar micro mill in the Pacific Northwest will help Nucor maintain its leadership in the steel bar market and further execute our strategy to better serve our customers west of the Rocky Mountains, which also includes the addition of a melt shop at our Arizona bar mill.’

A huge player

Nucor currently has 15 bar mills across the United States that manufacture a broad range of steel products, including concrete reinforcing bars, hot-rolled bars, rounds, light shapes, structural angles, channels, wire rod and highway products in carbon and alloy steels.
