‘Evolving’ automotive sector in Europe

United Kingdom – ‘In the next 20 years, if I were a betting person, I would see a time when we are actively mining landfills to find resources that have been lost to the manufacturing process,’ said BMW Group’s Bernadette Prosser at the CARS show held recently in Doncaster, UK. ‘While vehicle technologies are evolving, the recycling industry is evolving too,’ she added.

Said to be Europe′s biggest end-of-life (ELV) recycling trade show, CARS attracted over 1100 visitors and 70 exhibitors from 16 different countries and various industries. Topics discussed at the event included vehicles of the future and meeting the EU′s 2015 ELV targets. Regarding the latter, Prosser said that the EU′s approach is likely to become more similar to that for e-scrap and batteries, with targets set in relation to the volume of cars sold or put on to the market.

At CARS, the UK′s Motor Vehicle Dismantlers′ Association awarded the Bird Trophy to its honourable chairman Duncan Wemyss for his ′outstanding contribution′ to the UK vehicle dismantling and recycling industry.

Among other event highlights, JMC Recycling Systems of Nottingham in the UK showed visitors a vehicle dismantlers′ work line for the complete depollution and dismantling of ELVs and downstream processing of valuable materials. Other popular features included the ′Grading spare parts′ session run by Jason Bishop of FAB Recycling.
