US retailer claims success with battery take-back programme

United States – Home Depot recycled more than one million pounds (450 tonnes) of rechargeable batteries in 2016 through its instore take-back programme.

A partner of the non-profit product stewardship programme Call2Recycle, Home Depot provides a take-back recycling service at its 2000-plus stores across the USA and Canada. In total, the chain has recycled more than 8 million pounds (3600 tonnes) of rechargeable batteries since the partnership was launched in 2001.

‘For 16 years, Home Depot has made battery collection and recycling part of its environmental commitment,’ comments Call2Recycle’s ceo Carl Smith.

Home Depot is the world’s largest home improvement retailer, with 2278 stores across all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam and Mexico, as well as 10 Canadian provinces.
