United Arab Emirates – An investment of 120 million Emirati Dirham (US$ 32.6 million) is to be made in the construction of an advanced electronics recycling facility in Dubai, which is scheduled to become operational by the end of this year.
Enviroserve UAE has been commissioned by Dubai Wholesale City to build the 228 000 sq ft e-cycling plant employing ‘state-of-the-art’ equipment and with a capacity to process 39 000 tons of e-scrap per annum.
The facility will be designed to serve as a centre of recycling expertise for electronic waste management in the Middle East. To be located at Dubai Industrial Park and funded by the Swiss Government Export Finance Agency, the project represents ‘one of the largest foreign direct investments’ in the field of environmental management in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Devices and products to be recycled will include consumer and industrial electronics, air-conditioning units and batteries, as well as commercial and military items such as military avionics and mobile phones. Besides being the only dedicated refrigerant reclaim facility in the UAE, its operations will also cover aerosol cans and light bulbs.
Recently, United Nations-sponsored research revealed that, on average, more than 17 kg of e-scrap is generated annually per UAE inhabitant.
