Liberty to recycle Hertz’s used tyres

United States – Car rental company Hertz has signed an agreement in the USA with Liberty Tire Recycling to recycle all of the obsolete tyres from its entire fleet, amounting to some 170 000 units per year. Although 90% of obsolete tyres in the USA are recycled, Hertz is said to be the first car rental company to commit to a 100% tyre recycling programme.

Each year, around 290 million tyres are discarded in the USA, with 233 million recycled as fuel or ground up for use in, for example, roads, landfill linings, mulch, mats, under-carpet materials and railroad ties. ‘€˜Another big coming use is to mix our crumb recycled tyre rubber with liquid asphalt for a quieter, better-draining road,’€™ explains Jeff Kendall, CEO of Liberty Tire Recycling.

Pittsburgh-headquartered Liberty Tire Recycling processes 1.4 million tons of material from obsolete tyres each year.
