Ghana – Ghana is investing US$ 30 million in the construction of an e-scrap recycling facility at Agbogbloshie, the country’s ministry of environment, science, technology and innovations has announced. Work on the plant has already started.
Being built in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, it is claimed the e-cycling centre will process all electronic and electrical waste to a high standard while helping to create more than 400 000 jobs in the area.
‘One of Africa’s biggest e-waste dump sites at Agbogbloshie has recently been cited among the top 10 most polluted sites in the world,’ comments Francis Bullen Gavor, a consultant working on the project. ‘It is therefore important to find innovative ways to manage the waste generated in our various communities.’
Bullen is confident the new recycling plant will encourage locals to participate in take-back schemes and boost Ghana’s e-cycling rates.
