Scrap prices followed suit with bright
copper wire sold for US$ 8 701 at its
peak, chopped copper wire scrap was
traded in the same range and
chopped wire scrap of the second
quality was US$ 8 437. Heavy copper
scrap was worth US$ 8015 and Brass
scrap fetched US$ 5 220. Non-alloyed
bright wire scrap I traded at US$ 8
216.
ALUMINIUM
Three-month quotations on the LME
were last above US$ 2 490 per tonne
while visible stocks in the licensed
warehouses were recently only 392
275 tonnes for high grade goods and
2 060 tonnes for alloy. Outside the
LME, alloy 226 fetched around US$ 3
647, alloy 231 was at US$ 3 732, and
alloy 311 was around US$ 3 750.
Wire scrap last cost US$ 2 814, extru-
sion scrap fetched around US$ 2 857.

Following a four-year period where
only two major copper mines were
commissioned, the pipeline of copper
mine projects is increasing with major
projects in D.R Congo, Peru, Chile
and Russia.
Both primary and secondary (scrap)
output are expected to be higher in
2022 and 2023 with scrap set to bene-
fit from an improvement in the avail-
ability of scrap and additions to refin-
ery capacity. Projections indicate a
global surplus of about 140 000 tonnes
for 2022 and 350 000 tonnes for 2023.
HISTORIC INVESTMENT
Novelis has announced another major
investment in its US aluminium recy-
cling facilities with plans for a new
low-carbon recycling and rolling plant
in Bay Minette, Alabama, that is said
to be the first fully integrated alumini-
um mill built in the US in 40 years. The
US$ 2.5 billion (EUR 2.4 billion) facility
will have an initial annual capacity of
600 000 tonnes of finished goods,
more than half of which will serve the
growing demand for aluminium bever-
age can sheet in North America.
The group will soon be able to recycle
90 billion cans globally, up from the 74
billion it currently processes. In May,
the company broke ground at the
Guthrie, Kentucky site of a US$ 365
million recycling centre to serve the
north American automotive industry.
COPPER
Price declines were particularly notice-
able on the copper market. Prices on
the LME for three-month goods were
last valued around US$ 8 600 per
tonne, remaining well below the US$
9 000 mark, let alone the earlier high
point of US$ 10 000. Market observ-
ers are relaxed about this develop-
ment, however, believing the market
