MARKET ANALYSIS
market signal has been steadily under-
mined by the emergence of a shadow
LME storage function, which can mean
large amounts of previously uncount-
ed metal suddenly ‘arriving’ in a single
day.’
India has published a draft standard
covering domestic and imported alu-
minium and aluminium alloy scrap.
The initiative establishes six grades
and identifies their individual purity/
impurity thresholds, while also laying
out potential sampling procedures.
Industry representatives have been in
discussions with the Indian govern-
ment and observers expect further
tweaks to the draft with an anticipat-
ed implementation this year.
AURUBIS LOOKS TO US
Aurubis has set out a strategy for
delivering sustainable growth with a
particular focus on the US. Ceo
Roland Harings told a ‘Capital Market
Day’ in London in June that the com-
pany’s smelter network was the most
sustainable and efficient in the world.
‘We will continue to strengthen our
leading role through targeted, strategic
investments, like the construction of a
multi-metal recycling plant in the US
state of Georgia [Richmond], expanding
the tankhouse at our Bulgarian Pirdop
site, and the Complex Recycling
Hamburg project in Germany.
‘We see Aurubis Richmond as the first
step along the path to becoming a fully
integrated copper producer that uses
recycling materials in North America as
well. Future investments in the down-
stream copper value chain would put us
in a position to further strengthen the
circular economy in the US.’
Aurubis reports ‘very compelling’ results
from a pilot plant for battery recycling.
It predicts that the availability of black
mass will rapidly rise, in particular due
to an increase in the number of used
batteries available from electric vehicles
– and not just in Europe.
‘This would make entering the com-
mercial market attractive,’ the compa-
ny says. ‘The next step is to start the
first commercial activities in battery
recycling with a demo plant in 2024.
The company has already set clear cri-
teria for selecting a site for a commer-
cial plant for industrial scale produc-
tion starting in fiscal year 2026-27.’
COKE BOOST
Novelis has signed a long-term con-
tract to supply aluminium can sheet
for Coca-Cola’s family of iconic
brands. Contributing plants include
Bay Minette in Alabama which is cur-
rently under construction and expect-
ed to begin commissioning in 2025.
Novelis takes back manufacturing
scrap generated during the can-mak-
ing process, recycles it and produces
can sheet which is then made into
new beverage cans. The company
