company receives a number of receipt and delivery
documents proving it had shown up at a succession
of customers’ gates, the driver has had ample oppor-
tunity to make unscheduled and perhaps surprising
detours. These can entail simple matters such as
additional breaks or ‘small’ detours for private pur-
poses at the employer’s expense, but also criminal
activities such as metal theft.

The solution developed by GPSoverIP consists of a
versatile GPS tracking and data interchange system
that permits the continuous monitoring of all lorry
movements. Additionally, the device interfaces can
be used for additional functions such as the automatic
identification of containers with scanner reading
RFID tags. The related software can thus generate
an exact log of the vehicle’s movements, showing
what containers it has transported on specific sections
of its journey. The dispatcher has real-time knowl-
edge of its current position and can thus reassign
tasks at any moment. Furthermore, it is easy to check
whether there have been any movements not related
to valid transport orders. The solution even includes
special functions such as automatic alarms if a stand-
still period exceeds a pre-defined time limit.

Total communication

‘The Swyx voice communication tool offers a new
level of flexibility,’ explained Erwin Allemann,
Sales Manager of Bureautech Informatik of Biel,
Switzerland. One of its outstanding features is the
total integration of mobile phones into the compa-
ny’s fixed net communications architecture, includ-
ing fee reduction by linking voice communication
over the Internet. Another highlight is that, unlike
other solutions, it does not rely on hardware which
would become outdated sooner rather than later.
Instead, the solution is based on software operat-
ing under Microsoft Windows, which also elimi-
nates external maintenance costs since administra-
tion and updating functions can be performed by
the company’s own IT department.

The solution features functions such as intelligent
call management, voicemail and fax functionalities
as well as seamless direct integration in databases.
Calls ‘follow’ a person regardless of current location
and every employee can immediately ‘see’ whether
the person he wants to contact is currently avail-
able. Pointless dialling and the ‘busy’ tone on the
telephone thus become things of the past.

CargoSoft – international shipping

‘Our IT package CargoSoft is a solution for the
integrated national and international transporta-

outstanding feature of the package is its ability to
integrate and exchange data with internal as well
as external software systems, including RECY. This
greatly reduces data acquisition expenditure since
the same data set can be used throughout all stages
of order processing. CargoSoft offers functions for
export and import tariffing, multi-lingual forms and
screens, shipment and container dispositions, profit

share calculations and port orders.
Also useful is an interface to Atlas-
Zollbehörde, which provides for the fully
electronic handling of all relevant customs
regulations. The tool also includes an inter-
face to Zapp: this electronic export surveil-
lance system is mandatory in the port of
Hamburg, with Zapp having to be notified
of every export shipment. The system first
screens the data for consistency and type of
goods, and then either clears the shipment
by assigning it a B-number or decides what
type of customs control measures – for
example, a stop on the shipment or inspec-
tion – are appropriate.
