German manufacturer S+S Sepa-
ration and Sorting Technology
has unveiled the modular Vari-
sort Compact sorting system for
use with loose bulk materials.
According to the manufacturer, the sys-
tem is fl exible and easily adapts to dif-
ferent sorting jobs such as in the recy-
cling of electronic waste.
Different sensor technologies – induc-
tive, optical and near-infrared – can be
combined in the Varisort Compact. The
material to be examined is introduced
by way of adapted vibration chutes that
give homogeneous material distribution
over the complete width of a high-speed
conveyor belt. At the end of the belt, the
material is classifi ed by the correspond-
ing sensors. Upon evaluation of the rel-
evant information, high-speed valves
are activated with a corresponding time
delay to blow out the material. By way
of precisely-controlled blasts of com-
pressed air, the particles to be separated
are defl ected from their original fall
parabola into a separate duct.
Compared to conventional belt sorting
systems, the Varisort Compact is of
compact design such that it requires
little space while offering the user
greater mobility. Use of high-resolution
sensors and state-of-the-art signal
evaluation technologies provide a high
detection accuracy and analysis of up
to 500 000 parts per second, the com-
pany adds.

New drive-shafts for shredders
RTR Series processes pre-shredded tyres
P R O D U C T S
Parts supplier Dana has devel-
oped drive-shafts specifi cally
engineered for 6000 to 7000 HP
shredder motors.
According to the US manufacturer, the
Spicer GWB 393.90 Series drive-shaft
boasts: a compact design that provides
up to 1150 kNm torque capacity with
a fl ange diameter of 550 mm; a split-
bearing eye with a serrated bearing
cap designed to increase bearing life;
bearings with labyrinth seals; and
operating angles up to 10 deg.
Steve Watt, Marketing and Business
Development specialist for the Dana
Driveshaft Products Group, explains:
‘Dana produces a drive-shaft customised
for each scrap metal shredder that can
withstand the typical angularity, momen-
tary misalignment and torsional vibra-
tions common in these applications.’
The company, which supplies drive-
shafts for shredders with motors rang-
ing from 1000 to 9000 HP, introduced
the Spicer GWB 393.90 Series at the
recent US Institute of Scrap Recycling
Industries’ exposition in Las Vegas.

Vecoplan’s new RTR Series shred-
ders are specifi cally designed for
processing pre-shredded tyres.
According to the company, the unit can
produce tyre-derived fuel, crumb prod-
ucts, mulch, playground cover and
arena fi ll – as well as a variety of other
products – in one pass. The single-shaft
rotary unit effi ciently liberates wire
from rubber and rubber from wire to
generate two individually marketable
end products, it adds.
Shredders in the RTR Series are said to
deliver a low operating cost per tonne
of material processed owing to features
that include: easy access to wear items;
inexpensive and easily-replaced cutting
inserts; and Vecoplan’s patented ener-
gy-saving HiTorc magnetic pulse drive
that, the manufacturer claims, reduces
electrical costs by up to 85%.
RTR Series shredders feature dump-
and-run operation such that entire con-
tainers of pre-shredded tyres can be fed
into the hopper. Particle size output can
be varied and controlled through rapid
screen changes. All shredders in the
series comprise Hardox manganese
alloy side-walls, hard-faced rotors,
heavy-duty screens and a tyre-specifi c
smart ram feed programming package.

Major Wire Industries (MWI)
has developed a new applica-
tion designed to eliminate
blinding and pegging problems
on fl at-surface screen decks.
Flex-Thane independently-vibrating
wires, bonded in place with polyurethane
strips, will also provide more open area
for far greater throughput, higher pro-
duction and better effi ciency than poly-
urethane and rubber screens in hard-to-
screen applications, it is claimed.
Producers using polyurethane and rub-
ber screen panels often sacrifi ce signifi –
cant production for wear life, according
to the company from Quebec, Canada.
Especially in wet screening conditions,
whether through the use of spray bars
or through weather conditions, poly-
urethane and rubber screen openings
will often plug or blind. The result for
the producer is frequent shutdowns for
screen cleaning, wasted material and/
or out-of-spec material which, says the
company, defeats the purpose of a siz-
ing screen altogether.
Flex-Thane is available in 1-inch by
1-inch and 1-inch by 4-inch panel sizes,
with a variety of locking systems to fi t
virtually any fl at-surface polyurethane
screen deck. It can be custom-made in
1-inch by 2-inch and 1-inch by 3-inch
sizes as well as in mixed dimensions.
