Steinert
Steinert Elektromagnetbau of Cologne in
Germany, a market leader in metal recovery
and sensor-based sorting machines,
announced in New Orleans that it has
entered into a co-operative sales and service
venture in France, Germany and Austria
with Pellenc Selective Technologies (PST) of
Pertuis in France – an international supplier
of sorting equipment for paper, cardboard,
PET and PVC. Its products include state-of-
the-art, high-resolution near-infrared (NIR)
and colour-sorting machines.
According to the new partners, German
plant operators are demanding alternatives,
notably in the area of packaging materials
and substitute fuels. Such alternatives are
available from Steinert and Pellenc ST, par-
ticularly with regard to NIR technology.
Pellenc’s plants employ high-resolution NIR-
based spectrometry to recover high-purity
plastic materials.
Steinert’s technicians have completed an in-
depth training programme in France and will
now provide services for Pellenc’s plants in
Germany, thereby overcoming the language
barrier. According to Dr Ulrich Kohaupt,
Steinert’s Head of Marketing and Sales, the
co-operative sales venture will strengthen his
company’s market position in France beyond
its core activity of metal recycling.

Thermo Scientific/Niton
At the ISRI Exposition, Thermo Fisher
Scientific presented what it calls ‘the next
generation in analytical instrumentation’: the
Thermo Scientific Niton XL3p radioisotope-
based XRF analyser and the XL3t X-ray tube-
based XRF analyser.
The company’s Niton analysers are world
leaders in the sphere of portable X-ray fluo-
rescence (XRF) technology and are purpose-
built for demanding customer applications
such as the analysis of metal alloys in scrap
metal recycling, RoHS compliance and envi-
ronmental monitoring.
According to Niton, its new analysers are the
only portable XRF devices that allow customers
to select the X-ray source best suited to the
needs of their business. Key features of the new
XL3 series include: tilting colour touch-screen
display for easy viewing; splash-proofing and
dust-proofing; two rechargeable lithium-ion
batteries providing 8-12+ hours of continuous
operation; integrated USB and Blacktooth; a
high-performance software operating system
optimised for XRF sample analysis; alloying
chemistry for up to 30 of the most common ele-
ments in tens of thousands of alloy grades.
‘But perhaps the biggest improvement,’ not-
ed Niton’s Tom Andersen in New Orleans, ‘is
the fact that these analysers are incredibly fast.
Typical total testing times are less than five
seconds for difficult alloy separation, and as lit-
tle as one to two seconds for routine sorting.’

US Shredder and Castings Group
Formerly with Metso Lindemann and Metso
Texas Shredder, Bill Tigner started his own
company in June last year. US Shredder and
Castings Group offers equipment, parts and
service to the automobile and scrap shredding
industries throughout North and Central
America, including conveyors, shredder control
systems, castings and wear parts, metering
devices, rotors, magnetic separation systems,
and stationary and mobile shears and balers.
In March, the US Shredder and Castings
Group was selected by Shredded Products
LLC, a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc., to
upgrade its shredder system in Rocky Mount,
Virginia, USA. The project will be completed
in two phases: the first involves the installa-
tion of a complete stand-alone non-ferrous
system consisting of three Steinert eddy cur-
rent systems and an ISS system, Mr Tigner
explained in New Orleans. And he added:
‘The second phase will upgrade the system
with a WEG 4000 HP motor, US Shredder’s
unique shredder control and management
system, a water injection system, a new con-
trol housing with operator station, and a new
ferrous downstream. Then the ferrous down-
stream system will be connected to the non-
ferrous system, all of which will be operating
inside a newly-erected building.’
The US Shredder and Castings Group also
announced during the ISRI Exposition that
it had entered into an agreement with
Moros/North America and Industrias
Hidraulicas of Spain to assume sales and ser-
vice representation of the latter and of its
Moros brand of scrap processing equipment
throughout North America. Jay Klempner
and Ed List of Moros/North America will con-
tinue to service its existing customers.
In addition, Mr Tigner announced that his
company is now able to offer North America’s
scrap and recycling markets the range of
proven and affordable metal separation
equipment of Toratec Recycling Solutions.
Based at Bremen in Germany, Toratec offers
a variety of stainless steel and other metals
sorting machines such as the ‘EcoSort’. The
sorters can be fed by belt or a cost-effective
slide operation. With widths varying from
600 mm to 2400 mm, the metal sensors pro-
vide for simple integration into an existing
plant.
US Shredder and Castings Group’s corpo-
rate headquarters are in Brookhaven,
Mississippi, USA, while its operations base is
located at Mackinaw, Illinois, USA.
