software modifications ‘to meet changing crite-
ria and new market demands’. Each is custom-
designed according to the user’s process config-
uration and can be upgraded ‘to accommodate
changes in application, capacity and accuracy’.
Also in New Orleans, Innov-X unveiled its
new ‘ultra-rugged’ hand-held alloy analyser
dubbed the ‘Rhino’. Data can still be down-
loaded from his totally sealed, weatherproof
unit which does not feature a PDA, it was

Liebherr/RadComm
German material handler manufacturer
Liebherr is partnering Canadian radiation
detection equipment producer RadComm to
offer the first factory-installed, ‘retrofit avail-
able’ radiation detection system to be mount-
ed within its grapple. The Liebherr/RadComm
‘Cricket’ grapple-mounted radiation detection
system is designed specifically to meet the
needs of the scrap, steel and waste industries.
As the detector is located in the grapple,
every grapple load can be considered separate-
ly. ‘The Cricket will catch sources that may
have been missed by other radiation detection
systems,’ the companies say. Key features of
the Cricket/Liebherr system include: very high
detection capabilities; surface scan, load analy-
sis and manual mode alarms; and 2.5 times
the sensitivity of a typical vehicle system.
The Cricket is made more user-friendly by
the addition of colour graphics, a touch-screen
display console with audio and visual alarms,
and multi-language capabilities.

Metso Lindemann
Metso Lindemann, the renowned German
manufacturer of shears, presses and shred-
ders for the metals recycling industry,
announced the acquisition in March of Bulk
Equipment Systems and Technologies Inc.
(BEST) in a deal worth approximately Euro 9
million/US$ 12.2 million.
In North America, BEST is a leading sup-
plier of shredder downstream equipment as
well as process control and optimisation tech-
nologies. It owns an engineering and manu-
facturing facility with a technical test labora-
tory in Cleveland. Employing some 40 people,
its net sales in 2006 amounted to Euro 8 mil-
lion/US$ 11 million.
With this acquisition, Metso Minerals has
further strengthened its position in the North
American metal recycling market while the
process control know-how of BEST Inc. will
upgrade Metso’s offering not only in North
America, but also in Asia and Europe.
In New Orleans, Metso Lindemann also
announced it will supply a metal recycling
plant to GDE Group’s new scrap yard in
Limay, France; delivery is scheduled to be
completed by the end of the third quarter of
next year. Valued at around Euro 8
million/US$ 11 million, the order comprises a
complete metal recycling plant equipped with
a 6000 HP shredder and also includes erection
and commissioning services. According to
Metso, the Limay installation will represent
its most powerful metal recycling plant in
Continental Europe; when it reaches its nomi-
nal capacity, the facility will be capable of pro-
ducing 300 000 tonnes of ferrous and 30 000
tonnes of non-ferrous products per annum.

Sennebogen
In New Orleans, German manufacturer
Sennebogen showcased its new ‘Green Line’
825 D series of wheeled material handlers
which, the company says, ‘combines power,
strength and comfort with reduced operating
costs, while its ground-breaking technology
and outstanding working and safety conditions
guarantee the highest in productivity and effi-
ciency at maximum speed and reliability’.
The stable base of the 825 D is provided by a
completely re-designed and extremely steady
undercarriage. Latest HD axle technology is
combined with a two-stage power shift gear to
guarantee exceptional driving dynamics and
stability, according to Sennebogen. The new
machine also features improved kinematics
with a stronger boom system, 15% more power
and a ‘unique’ maXcab with a sliding door
which, the company claims, offers much more
comfort and security on entering than stan-
dard swinging doors. The maXcab, with its
hydraulic tilt, smoothly extends to 5.9 metres
and offers an excellent all-round view through
tinted panorama safety-glass.
